25/11/2020 @ 17:00 - 19:00

*Keep an eye out for the video conference link, which will be published in this Facebook event on the day of the webinar*
On the 25th of November, three scholars will take us through the multifaceted impacts of the current health crisis in Latin America. Each of them will be giving a lecture related to their fields of expertise, which then will be followed by a fruitful discussion moderated by a fourth scholar.
Our first speaker, Dr. María Gabriela Palacio Ludeña, is an assistant professor at Leiden University with a background in development and political economy. She will kick off the webinar with a lecture focused on COVID’s socio-economic dimensions in Latin America.
This will be followed by a lecture from Dr. Sergio Litewka, the director of global bioethics at the University of Miami Institute of Bioethics. He will be giving an overview on the current situation for some Latin American healthcare systems as well as the political and ideological strife that may influence decision making.
The third lecture will be given by Dr. Julienne Weegels, an assistant professor with the University of Amsterdam Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA). She seeks to explore how politics and disorder in the region were influenced by the pandemic, specifically looking at protests and prisons.
The final discussion will be moderated by Dr. Randal Sheppard, a cultural and political historian of Latin America at Leiden University. Jointly, we hope to come to a better understanding of the magnitude of COVID-19 in Latin America.
The webinar is open to anyone, we hope to see you there.
