SUMMARY:Reinterpretation of Ownership of Cultural Objects
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the 17th century\, The Netherlands\, as a colonial power\, has brought many cultural\, historical and religious objects from Indonesia\, Suriname and the Caribbean islands to domestic museums\, where the items are still exhibited today. The return of these objects to the source countries is a tense issue\, in particular due to constraining legal frameworks. As such\, it requires additional provenance research and a re-designed policy on colonial collections in Dutch museums. \nHasti Tarekat was appointed by the Minister of Education\, Culture and Science of the Netherlands as one of the members of the Advisory Committee on the National Policy Framework for Colonial Collections. She was actively involved in formulating the key principles of the policy that would facilitate the return of the cultural heritage objects. \nThe BASIS Academic Committee invites you to join the talk given by Hasti to learn more about her work! \n⏰ February 24th at 17:15 \n📍 Wijnhaven\, Room 3.48

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture on Truth\, Justice and Reconciliation in Colombia
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be given by Fabio Andres Díaz Pabón. He is a PhD candidate at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He has lectured at different universities in Colombia\, the Netherlands and South Africa. He also has worked as a consultant in Colombia and Southern Africa on issues related with public policy evaluation and budgeting\, capacity building and mathematical models for supporting policy making. \nThe signing of the peace agreements between the FARC-EP and the Colombian Government in late November 2016 generated hopes for peace in Colombia. However\, the consolidation of peace and justice requires us to think about how to operationalize peace agreements. Agreements are not enough. Thus reflecting on the existing challenges for the implementation of the agreements allows us to understand the current landscape in which the Colombian state is defaulting on its promise to implement a peace accord. This is the result of the tension between theory―the legislative frameworks guaranteeing human rights―and practice―the realization of these ideas― which frames Colombia’s challenges in consolidating the implementation of the peace agreements with the FARC-EP. Fabio’s work brings together reflections by Colombian academics and practitioners alongside pieces provided by researchers and practitioners in other countries where transitional justice initiatives have taken place (Bosnia and Herzegovina\, South Africa\, Sri Lanka and Peru).

SUMMARY:Movie Screening: Dominion
DESCRIPTION:Care committee will be screening a thought-provoking and inspiring movie by the producers of Lucent (2014). By exploring six primary facets of our interaction with animals – Companion Animals\, Wildlife\, Scientific Research\, Entertainment\, Clothing\, and Food – the film questions the morality and validity of our dominion over the animal kingdom. Dominion also makes use of emerging technologies\, such as aerial drones\, to capture new perspectives and examine the wider context of animal exploitation upon our landscape and within our society. \nGrab some popcorn a (non-alcoholic) drink and come by on Thursday!\nWe will have a short discussion afterward to share our views and opinions about the movie. \nNO ENTRANCE FEE !!! \n[room 3.48]
