SUMMARY:Africa Committee Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This semester\, the Africa committee book club features the book The Perfect Nine by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. The story is based on the origin myth of the Gĩkũyũ- Kenya’s largest tribe. This book tells the story of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi who fled war and hunger and settled down at the foot of Mount Kenya. When 99 suitors arrive on their land seeking to marry Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi’s 9 Beautiful daughters (“The Perfect Nine”)\, the partners tell their daughters to choose for themselves but to choose wisely. The book follows their journeys of becoming the “matriarchs of the Gĩkũyũ clans.”\nThe book club will be a place to chat\, to share thoughts and to have free discussion in smaller groups! Are you an advanced speaker but you don’t get to practice it often enough to keep up with the slang vocabulary? Or are you simply looking for an excuse to have some drinks and a good time?\nIf yes\, this is your opportunity to practice some Portuguese while getting to know other students that are just as enthusiastic about the language\, Africa and/or Latin America. Founded in 1899 with the First Hague Peace Conference\, the PCA is one of the most important bases of international law\, providing arbitration\, judgment\, and counsel for disputes between states\, intergovernmental organizations\, and other entities. International Studies strongly emphasizes the importance of international law and consensus building and the PCA is one of the foremost institutions in the maintenance of these essential parts of modern geopolitics.\n\nAcademic Committee is happy to be able to share the information for this special event and we hope you will take advantage of it!
