SUMMARY:Equity Conference: A Conscious Step Towards Social Change
DESCRIPTION:***The Equity Conference seeks to achieve social change by applying inclusive principles to all productive and social sectors on campus***\nThis one-day event includes a warm lunch\, two rounds of workshops\, an opening and closing lecture\, as well as a laid-back Borrel in the evening.\n\nThe aim of this conference is to *inspire change* and:\n– build a capacity for student representatives to be more responsive and included in issues related to equality and equity\, focusing on social inclusion and cross-integration of every student\n– reshape public discourse about (un)intentional discrimination and confront hate speech on campus\n– inspire other student-led activities addressing similar issues\n______________________________________________________\nOpening Lecture:\n\nRADICAL LISTENING: EMBRACING OUR DIFFERENCES by Dr. Maria Gabriela Palacio Ludena\n\nABSTRACT: Listening is an art\, and as such\, it has to be cultivated and practiced with compassion and discipline. If we want to accommodate diversity\, without suppressing differences\, lumping them together\, or essentializing them; we should first teach ourselves how to listen to each other mindfully. But\, are we equipped to do so? Listening also has its own rules and norms. To have a meaningful exchange of ideas\, we first need to be aware of our positionality (meet ourselves) to create the space for empathy (meet the Other). The condition of such empathy emerges from recognizing and understanding ourselves and each other\, reaching out and overcoming the fear of encountering difference or seeing ourselves changing in the process\, being seen as different. Yet\, how to overcome that fear? My talk will explore the various openings and possibilities to listen to each other within the institutional structure in which we operate\, recognizing the differences that inform our struggles and the shared experiences that could bring us together\, that is\, recasting difference as a dynamic human force (A. Lorde). SUMMARY:Guest Lecture: Democracy Building in Colombia - LatinAmericaCom
DESCRIPTION:This year Colombia is commemorating 200 years of its independent political life. From the Colombian Embassy\, Ricardo Urdaneta\, lawyer\, founder of Urdaneta Holguín Abogados and a national arbitrator in Colombia\, will discuss the process of democracy building in Colombia. He will discuss key points that Colombia had to undergo to achieve his independence\, such as the consolidation of democracy\, institution-building\, implementation of public policies\, challenges related to violence and internal conflicts\, the dialogues and peace negotiations among others. Moreover\, how has this lead to Colombia to the challenges it faces today? Subjects such as the massive migration from Venezuela\, the peace agreements of the former guerrilla FARC\, and overcoming violence are just a few that the lecturer will touch upon. \n \n Some drinks and snacks will be provided after the lecture so that you have the opportunity to talk to the lecturer and ask questions. SUMMARY:Environmental Issues: The Role of Society and Economy
DESCRIPTION:How can we tackle the many environmental challenges of our world? Who and what needs to change to ensure a sustainable future? What is the role of local actors in addressing these issues? \nThe main theme of this one-day academic conference is to understand the socio-environmental challenges the world is facing\, with a particular focus on the region of Latin America. \n__________________________________________________ \nTickets are limited. Prices are €8 for students and €10 for non-students\, including lunch and goodiebag. Each participant can attend both lectures and can attend 2 out of 7 possible modules. Unfortunately\, due to a limited amount of available spots in the modules\, we cannot guarantee all preferences.\n__________________________________________________ \nAfter registration the event will start with the first lecture by Lorenzo Pellegrini on “Community-based environmental monitoring in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon: technologies as instruments in the struggle for environmental justice”. The event will proceed with a lunch break and an information fair of local sustainable companies. \nAfter lunch\, the two rounds of modules begin. Participants can attend 2 of the 7 modules:\n1) “Chinese capital and the question of development in Latin America and the Caribbean” by Ruben Gonzalez-Vicente \n2) “Just a story of heroes and villains?
