SUMMARY:Eurasia Borrel
DESCRIPTION:It is slowly getting colder outside and the Eurasian Committee is delighted to share with you the Slavic and Caucasian secrets of creating warmth from within! 🔥🥃 \nIn close alignment with our Soviet fathers\, we naturally dedicated ourselves to the promotion of understanding between the nations of Eurasia. ✊🏻 \nStarting with a Georgian drinking tradition\, in groups of friends one Tamada [Toastmaster] is chosen – common requirement for a good tamada is a high tolerance for alcohol as well as a lot of pathos -\, who then makes the obligatory first toasts on 1) the spirit of the hosting location\, 2) life itself and 3) the country of Georgia! 🇬🇪 \nWith rising levels of alcohol and increased confidence\, the Tamada can assign toasts to the others – the more overflowing and dramatic the better! ☄ By the way: There is a special toast for late comers\, who are usually fined with extensive drinking – how much is up to the Tamada.🍾 \nNext to our much valued Caucasian traditions we of course made sure that our Slavic siblings won’t miss out: in order to provide the right atmosphere\, our dresscode is either //Slav Adidas Tracksuit// and //Babushka//! 👵 (or mix both if you’re really feeling it)\nWe will also provide cards for you to play other drinking games with🍻 \nAll of that underlined with music ranging from Soviet Underground Rock over Russian Rap to Georgian Folk\, be sure that this will be a night you wish to remember. 🎬

SUMMARY:Sweet Smoke of the Fatherland w/ Mascha Novikova
DESCRIPTION:The Eurasian Committee is proud to announce its first movie screening of this semester. The documentary selected is called “Sweet Smoke of the Fatherland”. The movie night would be followed by a discussion with the talented Russian film director Mascha Novikova. \nThe documentary tells the story of three old people from three very different places in Europe: Catalonia\, Lithuania and Abkhazia. People who saw wars come and go and who chose not to take a part in them\, but to stay on the sidelines\, to cultivate the land and to tidy up. \nThe three of them live in the place where they were born. They are elderly\, poor\, living in isolated places. They feed the chickens and the goats\, they cook on a wood stove\, they cultivate a bit of land – in as far as they are still capable. This makes Sweet Smoke of the Fatherland not just a story about war and people’s responses to it\, but also about old age and loneliness\, about people who feel connected to the soil that produced them and where they have experienced so much. They keep living there with all their beautiful and painful memories and dreams that\, despite everything\, they still have. \nWhere: Wijnhaven\, room 2.02\n⏳ When: March 11th (Monday) at 19:00 \nPopcorn&Snacks on the house! \nSee you all very soon!
