SUMMARY:Orientalism in modern travel photography
DESCRIPTION:What is Orientalism? and in what forms and mediums does it exist today? This event will look at the classical forms of Orientalism as identified by the late Edward Said\, and then ask the question – is it still a phenomenon today? From travel photography and publications (National Geographic) to travel influencers\, photography and storytelling are a powerful tool that can be used to tell a story. Join me\, as we deconstruct Orientalism in Photography.\nIn this lecture\, writer\, translator\, commentator and photographer Zirrar (https://zirrar.com/ or @zirrar on Instagram) will discuss the role of photography and the visual representation of the global south and how attitudes towards “the Orient” form a larger institutionalised system of representing “the Orient” and “the native” through the lens of the West.\nJoin us on Wednesday to learn more about orientalism in visual storytelling. The lecture starts at 19.00 and there will be an opportunity for a Q&A at the end of the talk.\nPlease sign up here: https://qfreeaccountssjc1.az1.qualtrics.com/…/SV…\nLink to the event\, open for everyone to attend: https://smart.newrow.com/#/room/gfw-190

SUMMARY:Filmscreening: For Sama (2nd screening)
DESCRIPTION:Due to overwhelming enthusiasm the BASIS – Middle East Committee will be hosting a second screening of the award winning and oscar nominated documentary\, FOR SAMA. \nThis event unfortunately also has limited capacity and therefore we require everyone to sign up for this event. This will be on a first come\, first serve basis. There are 30 spots available and you can sign up through the link below:\nhttps://forms.gle/ERu7w1C5E4M2Mjg78 \n————————— \nFOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter\, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo\, Syria as she falls in love\, gets married and gives birth to Sama\, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. \nHer camera captures incredible stories of loss\, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life\, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. \nWHEN? March 2nd at 19.30 (7.30PM)\nWHERE? Room 360 at Wijnhaven\nWe will provide snacks and drinks! \nThis event is free\, but please consider to support the filmmakers of FOR SAMA. \nWith no end in sight to the attacks in Idlib\, the Syrian medics\, healthcare workers and civil society organisations leading the humanitarian response need all the support they can get. This is particularly acute as foreign governments’ funding to Syria decreases year on year\, while the needs grow ever greater. \nPlease visit www.actionforsama.com and get involved!

SUMMARY:MeCo x Karama: Youth Activism in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The Middle East committee in collaboration with the Human Rights NGO Karama proudly presents an open discussion with four young activists from Syria\, Yemen\, Libya\, and Iraq. After receiving a lot of positive feedback after the first edition of this event in January MeCo and Karama have decided to relaunch the event and invite two additional speakers. \nThere will be a moderated discussion with the speakers followed by a Q&A with the audience. \nSPEAKERS: \nBushra Alhamdan– Syria\nOriginally from Homs\, Bushra worked as a volunteer for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent project before settling in Damascus in 2016. Since then\, she has worked in several aid relief programs such as Action Against Hunger and Secours Islamique France\, all the while she seeks to document human rights violations in the country. \nWijdan Al-Matari – Yemen\nEven though Wijdan lived in terrible circumstances in Yemen\, she decided not to give up. She became a role model for other young adults in the area by committing herself to humanitarian activism. She is active in youth\, peace and security and promotes women’s political empowerment. \nYounes Nagem – Libya\nAfter the Arab spring\, Younes was confronted with unemployment\, racism and violence by the police and the army. However\, he stood tall and pushed through; he started his own successful IT business (BYTE) in Benghazi\, combining business and human rights\, and he is a passionate advocate for democracy and equal rights. \nTara Ali Ashour – Iraq\nTara is an example for other young women in the region when it comes to female empowerment. She works at the Women Empowerment Organization\, which was the only organization of its kind left in Mosul following the liberation from ISIS. She works on-the-ground\, participating in numerous aid relief programs in refugee camps and is involved in the implementation of UN resolution 1325. \nThe event is open to everyone but please make sure to register through the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfcqetoQSYd0rW_m8l9448Nf_Tss0i2PvnlB6YaPfR14fYu-g/viewform?usp=pp_url

SUMMARY:MECo: The Arabic Language Café
DESCRIPTION:The Middle East Committee proudly presents the first Middle East Language Café\, open to all students of Leiden University learning a Middle Eastern language and interested in exchanging either Dutch or English. \nIn this one-hour interactive language exchange session\, we aim to address the gap of contact between students learning Arabic and (Dutch or English-learning) refugees and native speakers in The Hague.  \nThere are many programs focused on students aiding the integration of refugees\, but not many that focus on the linguistic aspect and maximise on the potential valuable cultural exchange that could come forth from interaction between people interested in the region and people from the region. We hope to hereby create a platform where this can take place. \nSpread the word\, come practice your Arabic presentation\, ask questions regarding coursework and seize the opportunity to practice! \nFeel free to contact us at mec@basisthehague.nl about any questions\, suggestions or concerns you may have and see you on the 15th.
