SUMMARY:Lecture on the repatriation of IS women and children
DESCRIPTION:Join the Middle East Committee on Wednesday the 15th of December (7.15PM-8.30PM) for a lecture and Q&A on the repatriation of IS women and children. \nAfter the collapse of the Islamic State’s ‘caliphate\,’ thousands of IS fighters and supporters were captured by the Kurdish military and brought to camps or prisons. An estimated 68\,000 people\, 94 percent of which women and children\, were reported to be staying in camp al-Hol in 2019. As time moves on and foreign women and children are stuck in Kurdish refugee camps\, Western states debate on whether or not to repatriate these people.\nRecently\, the Dutch cabinet has decided it wants to try to repatriate five women that formerly joined the Islamic State. With arguments concerning safety both supporting and discouraging repatriation\, Western governments find it increasingly difficult to justify their decisions. \nProfessor on terrorism and counterterrorism Edwin Bakker will discuss the situation by giving an overview on the short history\, the facts and figures\, the arguments around repatriation\, and the current situation. \nPlease sign up through this link: https://qfreeaccountssjc1.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8uLdUqw8FEH1iAK

SUMMARY:Orientalism in modern travel photography
DESCRIPTION:What is Orientalism? and in what forms and mediums does it exist today? This event will look at the classical forms of Orientalism as identified by the late Edward Said\, and then ask the question – is it still a phenomenon today? From travel photography and publications (National Geographic) to travel influencers\, photography and storytelling are a powerful tool that can be used to tell a story. Join me\, as we deconstruct Orientalism in Photography.\nIn this lecture\, writer\, translator\, commentator and photographer Zirrar (https://zirrar.com/ or @zirrar on Instagram) will discuss the role of photography and the visual representation of the global south and how attitudes towards “the Orient” form a larger institutionalised system of representing “the Orient” and “the native” through the lens of the West.\nJoin us on Wednesday to learn more about orientalism in visual storytelling. The lecture starts at 19.00 and there will be an opportunity for a Q&A at the end of the talk.\nPlease sign up here: https://qfreeaccountssjc1.az1.qualtrics.com/…/SV…\nLink to the event\, open for everyone to attend: https://smart.newrow.com/#/room/gfw-190

SUMMARY:Filmscreening: For Sama (2nd screening)
DESCRIPTION:Due to overwhelming enthusiasm the BASIS – Middle East Committee will be hosting a second screening of the award winning and oscar nominated documentary\, FOR SAMA. \nThis event unfortunately also has limited capacity and therefore we require everyone to sign up for this event. This will be on a first come\, first serve basis. There are 30 spots available and you can sign up through the link below:\nhttps://forms.gle/ERu7w1C5E4M2Mjg78 \n————————— \nFOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter\, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo\, Syria as she falls in love\, gets married and gives birth to Sama\, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. \nHer camera captures incredible stories of loss\, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life\, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. \nWHEN? March 2nd at 19.30 (7.30PM)\nWHERE? Room 360 at Wijnhaven\nWe will provide snacks and drinks! \nThis event is free\, but please consider to support the filmmakers of FOR SAMA. \nWith no end in sight to the attacks in Idlib\, the Syrian medics\, healthcare workers and civil society organisations leading the humanitarian response need all the support they can get. This is particularly acute as foreign governments’ funding to Syria decreases year on year\, while the needs grow ever greater. \nPlease visit www.actionforsama.com and get involved!

SUMMARY:Film Screening: For Sama
DESCRIPTION:The BASIS – Middle East Committee is super excited to announce that we are hosting a film screening of the award winning and Oscar nominated documentary FOR SAMA!\n \n FOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter\, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo\, Syria as she falls in love\, gets married and gives birth to Sama\, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.\n \n Her camera captures incredible stories of loss\, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life\, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. \nWHEN? February 24th at 19.30 (7.30PM)\nWHERE? Room 356 at Wijnhaven\nWe will provide snacks and drinks!
