SUMMARY:Guest Lecture: Democracy Building in Colombia - LatinAmericaCom
DESCRIPTION:This year Colombia is commemorating 200 years of its independent political life. From the Colombian Embassy\, Ricardo Urdaneta\, lawyer\, founder of Urdaneta Holguín Abogados and a national arbitrator in Colombia\, will discuss the process of democracy building in Colombia. He will discuss key points that Colombia had to undergo to achieve his independence\, such as the consolidation of democracy\, institution-building\, implementation of public policies\, challenges related to violence and internal conflicts\, the dialogues and peace negotiations among others. Moreover\, how has this lead to Colombia to the challenges it faces today? Subjects such as the massive migration from Venezuela\, the peace agreements of the former guerrilla FARC\, and overcoming violence are just a few that the lecturer will touch upon. \n \n Some drinks and snacks will be provided after the lecture so that you have the opportunity to talk to the lecturer and ask questions. This is your opportunity to watch this brilliant movie (again) together with your peers and dive even deeper into an analysis of it and its context in the following discussion by:\n– our amazing politics Latin America lecturer Dr. Randal Sheppard (Mexico specialist and fantastic art commentator)\n– the one and only Dr. Maria Gabriela Palacio Ludeña (focuses on domestic work in Latin America though the lenses of gender\, race\, and ethnicity) \nA bit about the movie: Roma was written and directed by the Alfonso Cuarón\, who is\, by the way\, the first Latin American director to receive the Academy Award for Best Director. The movie is a semi-autobiographical take on Cuarón’s upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. It follows a year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid named Cleo in the early 1970s and touches upon many interesting socio-political events of that time period.  \nWhen? SUMMARY:Guest Lecture - Torture and Forced Disappearances in Ciudad Juarez
DESCRIPTION:Mexico is going through a challenging period in its history\, with skyrocketing homicide rates\, an official list of more than 40\,000 disappeared people and high levels of impunity. The border city of Ciudad Juárez\, infamous for the many femicides and the insecurity the local inhabitants have to deal with\, has been especially hard hit by this new wave of violence. From 2008 until 2010\, Ciudad Juárez was even considered the most violent city in the world and in 2019\, though homicide rates dropped after 2010\, the city is still considered the 5th most violent city in the world. Against this background of violence\, forced disappearances and impunity\, defending human rights may sometimes be challenging as well. \nIn this lecture\, Maricela Vázquez Sánchez\, a lawyer and human rights defender who works for the local human rights organisation Paso del Norte\, will discuss the current situation in Ciudad Juárez\, and will explain how it is to accompany family members of victims of forced disappearances and torture. She will not only explore the negative side of her city\, but she will also show what the local society does in order to demand justice and peace. \n  \nThe lecture will be organised in collaboration with Peace Brigades International – The Netherlands (@PBINederland)\, a human rights organisation which accompanies Maricela Vázquez Sánchez during her tour through Europe to request support from international organisations and political figures\, and to raise awareness about what is going on in Ciudad Juárez.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture on Truth\, Justice and Reconciliation in Colombia
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be given by Fabio Andres Díaz Pabón. He is a PhD candidate at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He has lectured at different universities in Colombia\, the Netherlands and South Africa. He also has worked as a consultant in Colombia and Southern Africa on issues related with public policy evaluation and budgeting\, capacity building and mathematical models for supporting policy making. \nThe signing of the peace agreements between the FARC-EP and the Colombian Government in late November 2016 generated hopes for peace in Colombia. However\, the consolidation of peace and justice requires us to think about how to operationalize peace agreements. Agreements are not enough. Thus reflecting on the existing challenges for the implementation of the agreements allows us to understand the current landscape in which the Colombian state is defaulting on its promise to implement a peace accord. This is the result of the tension between theory―the legislative frameworks guaranteeing human rights―and practice―the realization of these ideas― which frames Colombia’s challenges in consolidating the implementation of the peace agreements with the FARC-EP. Fabio’s work brings together reflections by Colombian academics and practitioners alongside pieces provided by researchers and practitioners in other countries where transitional justice initiatives have taken place (Bosnia and Herzegovina\, South Africa\, Sri Lanka and Peru).
