SUMMARY:Equity Project: Human Library
DESCRIPTION:****The Equity Project\, initiated by the Study Association BASIS\, seeks to achieve social change\, by applying inclusive principles to all productive and social sectors at Leiden University – Campus The Hague.****\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Human Library is a project in collaboration with Reach & Teach\, a non-profit organisation in The Hague\, designed to help build a positive framework through which conversations and dialogue can challenge stereotypes and prejudices. Very similar to how any ordinary library works\, “readers” or participants can engage in conversation and experience real-life stories\, at first hand. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected\, appreciated and answered. Join us for an evening of extra-ordinary stories by extra-ordinary people!

SUMMARY:Climate and Security in the Sahel region
DESCRIPTION:Draught\, degradation and severe floods: climate change is increasingly becoming a security issue. \nThe recent instabilities in the Sahel region\, such as the uprisings in Mali and Nigeria and the civil war in Sudan\, indicate a connection between climate change and security. The UN Special Adviser of the Secretary-General for the Sahel\, Ibrahim Thiaw\, described the Sahel as “arguably one of the most vulnerable [regions] to climate change.” \nOn November 14th\, we will focus on the Sahel\, a region that spreads from East to West in Africa and divides the continent between the desert in the North and its tropical grounds in the South. We will not only discuss the security implications of climate change for the Sahel\, but also the implications for its surrounding regions such as North-Africa and the Mediterranean. \nThe former Chief of Defence of the Netherlands\, General Tom Middendorp is our keynote speaker. As the ‘green general of the Netherlands’ he will share his views on the topic and experiences with climate security. \nThis event is hosted by the Jonge Atlantici/YATA Netherlands in cooperation with study association BASIS.

SUMMARY:Listen & ask [how we go beyond series]
DESCRIPTION:BASIS invites you to listen more and study the art of asking questions. \nThis workshop will focus on familiarizing participants with the Socratic Dialogue method and allows one to apply it to various situations in the context of student organisations\, group assignments\, or professional (internship) engagements. A Socratic Dialogue is an approach to become a better listener\, asking the right questions\, and ultimately the better moderation or facilitation of dialogue. \nAbout the Socratic Dialogue\nA Socratic Dialogue is a conversation method that makes it possible to reflect on important issues as a group. This implies that in principle nobody is wrong or right. Conclusions aren’t even important\, they are just steps on the way. Like the original dialogues of the philosopher Socrates there might even not be a final conclusion at all. The process of the dialogue is all that really matters. This process might even be experienced as a kind of flow\, where every participant feels fully immersed into the communal exchange of thoughts. On top of that\, the question that has been chosen for the dialogue\, is examined from every possible perspective\, which often gives rise to innovative ideas and solutions\, because the views of all participants are compared and unified. It is a great way to train emphatic listening and multifaceted thinking. \nAbout the trainer\nErik Hoogcarspel studied philosophy and Buddhology in Groningen and Leiden. He taught Hinduism at the University of Nijmegen and philosophy at colleges and at the Internationale School voor Wijsbegeerte. His publications include a translation of a Buddhist second century text from Sanskrit to both Dutch and English\, and a book about the feasibility of a Western Buddhism. He published in several magazines and taught Socratic dialogue in high schools\, in pubs and in private institutions. \nRegistration to this event is compulsory and requires a modest fee of €2. \nThe workshop will be given by a professional trainer and includes coffee/thee/water.\n\nLocation: room 3.54 at the Wijnhaven Campus. \n  \n  Learn about the other How We Go Beyond workshops

SUMMARY:The conflict between Northern Ireland and the Republic Ireland
DESCRIPTION:JASON x BASIS: The border conflict between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and the implications of Brexit \nOn the 9th of April\, the JASON Institute and the study association for BA International Studies (BASIS) will host a special lecture on the background of the border conflict between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and how the Brexit could affect tensions in the area. \nEven though the so-called Brexit-fatigue has started to set in\, it still is the talk of the town. With only a few weeks to go until the United Kingdom formally leaves the European Union\, many issues remain unresolved after two years of negotiations. Emotions have often run high when negotiating a deal with the EU and one issue that has proven particularly sensitive is the so-called ‘backstop’ agreement. This agreement would guarantee that the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland remains open when the UK leaves the EU. An open border has existed between the two places since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998\, which put an end to decades of ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland. Fears have arisen that reestablishing a border can mean a return to violence and with the recent car bomb attack by the New IRA\, a dissident republican group\, such an outcome is not unimaginable. But what exactly stood at the root of that conflict? Is the population still so divided on the issue? What will a hard border mean for peace and security in the region? \nThis is a unique opportunity to go into depth on the conflict and look at the Brexit debate from a more security-focused perspective. After the lecture\, there is some time to ask questions and afterwards\, you can continue the discussion at the bar in Wijnhaven\, first drinks are on us! \n> Date: 9 April 2019\, 19:00\n> Location: Spanish steps\n> Speaker: Dr. Joost Augusteijn\n> The event is free\, but registration is required through the following link: http://bit.ly/JASONbrexit

SUMMARY:Clash of the Courses - Election Wars: The Courses Strike Back
DESCRIPTION:They said that it was over\, that the first and last Clash of the Courses had happened and we would never see its like again! They said it couldn’t be done\, that it would be too complicated to do another mega-borrel that contained all the organisations that inhabit our dear\, dear Campus The Hague. But they are wrong. The echoes of last semester’s borrel are strong and we are ready to deliver once more! While we did say that the previous time was the competition to end all competitions\, much like climbing\, there’s always another mountain top to ascend! \nJoin us at O’Casey’s on the 2nd of April at 20:00 and behold the return of champions of old\, fighting to claim their rightful prize and witness the valiant winners of the OG Clash defend their (perhaps not-so) eternal boasting rights! Who will win and climb to the highest heights? Who will fall to the depths of a well-deserved pint? Find out at this semester’s Clash of the Courses! As our very own University Elections are right around the corner\, the competition will take the form of a pubquiz where elections are the name of the game! But don’t worry\, we’ll sprinkle in some random\, non-political questions too. \nThis borrel is hosted by the Democratic Students Party – The Hague and the many study organizations at our Campus: BASIS\, CIROS\, SPIL\, Custodia\, ASTUS and IRSA. With this borrel\, we hope to foster cross programme connections and at the same time sneakily educate the student body about the upcoming university elections. After the quiz\, student representatives from the University Council will be there if you want to ask them some questions and learn more about their work in the Council and university democracy in general.

SUMMARY:General Assembly Numero Uno (#1)
DESCRIPTION:In our first General Assembly of the year\, we invite all BASIS members to come together as we discuss the budget for the coming semester and vote in the new committee members! \nThe official agenda will be published soon\, so be sure to click ‘going’ to stay up to date! (an email will also be sent)  \nAfterwards we’ll all go to the borrel at Libertijn together for some well-deserved relaxing! \nWhat even is a GA? \nThe GA is an official gathering of the BASIS study association. As we are a legally registered entity\, it is compulsory for us to give members a financial overview of BASIS\, as well as\, what cool projects we have prepared for you this year! The GA is occasionally used to revise the legal statutes and policy manual. The statutes and policy manual basically stipulate the ‘rules’ of BASIS\, e.g. how many members a committee board can have\, how many events a committee should hold every year.  \nWhy should you attend? \nThe GA is the only occasion in which all BASIS students can unite. It is an opportunity to come together and discuss ideas\, concerns and suggestions for our study association. Do you want to understand what BASIS does? Do you want to know what we’re doing with your 20€ membership? Do you have ideas and projects of your own that you would like to present? All these questions will be addressed in our GA! \nAlso\, it’s a great occasion for you to meet the decision-makers of BASIS in person: the BASIS board and the committee heads. Come talk to us if you have new ideas – we’re always open to creativity and motivation.  \nWe’re looking forward to see you the 25th! \n  \nAgenda \n1.
