All these questions will be addressed in our GA! Also\, it’s a great occasion for you to meet the decision-makers of BASIS in person: the BASIS board and the committee heads. Come talk to us if you have new ideas – we’re always open to creativity and motivation.\nWe’re looking forward to seeing you on the 29th!\n\nLink to the minutes of the last General Assembly:\nhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1kF4zC8lV-tLCKWEVwlVYGj2XnJPFH_sPXlYzcfLpj3o/edit?usp=sharing

SUMMARY:Equity Conference: A Conscious Step Towards Social Change
DESCRIPTION:***The Equity Conference seeks to achieve social change by applying inclusive principles to all productive and social sectors on campus***\nThis one-day event includes a warm lunch\, two rounds of workshops\, an opening and closing lecture\, as well as a laid-back Borrel in the evening.\n\nThe aim of this conference is to *inspire change* and:\n– build a capacity for student representatives to be more responsive and included in issues related to equality and equity\, focusing on social inclusion and cross-integration of every student\n– reshape public discourse about (un)intentional discrimination and confront hate speech on campus\n– inspire other student-led activities addressing similar issues\n______________________________________________________\nOpening Lecture:\n\nRADICAL LISTENING: EMBRACING OUR DIFFERENCES by Dr. Maria Gabriela Palacio Ludena\n\nABSTRACT: Listening is an art\, and as such\, it has to be cultivated and practiced with compassion and discipline. If we want to accommodate diversity\, without suppressing differences\, lumping them together\, or essentializing them; we should first teach ourselves how to listen to each other mindfully. But\, are we equipped to do so? Listening also has its own rules and norms. To have a meaningful exchange of ideas\, we first need to be aware of our positionality (meet ourselves) to create the space for empathy (meet the Other). The condition of such empathy emerges from recognizing and understanding ourselves and each other\, reaching out and overcoming the fear of encountering difference or seeing ourselves changing in the process\, being seen as different. Yet\, how to overcome that fear? My talk will explore the various openings and possibilities to listen to each other within the institutional structure in which we operate\, recognizing the differences that inform our struggles and the shared experiences that could bring us together\, that is\, recasting difference as a dynamic human force (A. Lorde). I hope to engage in open critical dialogue with the audience and co-create a space where we can hear one another through the differences and complexities of our experiences.\n______________________________________________________\n\nSome of the workshops we have organized are:\n“How to make the classroom more queer.” by Dr. Eduardo Alves Vieira\n\n“Beyond privilege and guilt: what it means to be inclusive?” by MA Tamara Soukotta\n“Finding your queer community.” by the LGBTQ+ Committee of Fortuna\n“Including disability at Leiden University.” by Lucia Langerak (Access & Support Platform)\n“Facilitating LGBT+ Identity Development” H.G.S.V. Philautia – The Hague’s LGBT+ Student Association\n“How ‘virus’ am I? Minority Discrimination based on the Coronavirus Outbreak” by Vincent Yeers\n\nMore lined up speakers and workshops will be announced soon!\n______________________________________________________\nPrior to the closing lecture we will have the opportunity to hear from fellow students/alumni about their experiences with disability\, sexuality\, ethnicity and gender on (and off-) campus.\n______________________________________________________\n\n10:30 – 11:00 __REGISTRATION\n11:00 – 12:00 __OPENING LECTURE\n12:00 – 13:00 __WARM LUNCH\n13:00 – 13:45 __WORKSHOP ROUND 1\n14:00 – 14:45 __WORKSHOP ROUND 2\n15:00 – 16:30 __Student’s Experiences & CLOSING LECTURE\n16:30 – ????? __BORREL\n______________________________________________________\nThe abstract of the closing lecture by Prof. Dr. O’Malley will be published soon.\n______________________________________________________\n\nTicket Price:\nBASIS member: €3\nnon-BASIS member: €6\n\nThe ticket includes a warm vegetarian/vegan lunch and entry to two workshops of your choice!\n\nBe quick to sign-up in order to get your preferred workshops!!!

SUMMARY:Equity Project: Human Library
DESCRIPTION:****The Equity Project\, initiated by the Study Association BASIS\, seeks to achieve social change\, by applying inclusive principles to all productive and social sectors at Leiden University – Campus The Hague.****\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Human Library is a project in collaboration with Reach & Teach\, a non-profit organisation in The Hague\, designed to help build a positive framework through which conversations and dialogue can challenge stereotypes and prejudices. Very similar to how any ordinary library works\, “readers” or participants can engage in conversation and experience real-life stories\, at first hand. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected\, appreciated and answered. SUMMARY:Climate and Security in the Sahel region
DESCRIPTION:Draught\, degradation and severe floods: climate change is increasingly becoming a security issue. \nThe recent instabilities in the Sahel region\, such as the uprisings in Mali and Nigeria and the civil war in Sudan\, indicate a connection between climate change and security. The UN Special Adviser of the Secretary-General for the Sahel\, Ibrahim Thiaw\, described the Sahel as “arguably one of the most vulnerable [regions] to climate change.” \nOn November 14th\, we will focus on the Sahel\, a region that spreads from East to West in Africa and divides the continent between the desert in the North and its tropical grounds in the South. We will not only discuss the security implications of climate change for the Sahel\, but also the implications for its surrounding regions such as North-Africa and the Mediterranean. \nThe former Chief of Defence of the Netherlands\, General Tom Middendorp is our keynote speaker. As the ‘green general of the Netherlands’ he will share his views on the topic and experiences with climate security. \nThis event is hosted by the Jonge Atlantici/YATA Netherlands in cooperation with study association BASIS.

SUMMARY:Listen & ask [how we go beyond series]
DESCRIPTION:BASIS invites you to listen more and study the art of asking questions. \nThis workshop will focus on familiarizing participants with the Socratic Dialogue method and allows one to apply it to various situations in the context of student organisations\, group assignments\, or professional (internship) engagements. A Socratic Dialogue is an approach to become a better listener\, asking the right questions\, and ultimately the better moderation or facilitation of dialogue. \nAbout the Socratic Dialogue\nA Socratic Dialogue is a conversation method that makes it possible to reflect on important issues as a group. This implies that in principle nobody is wrong or right. Conclusions aren’t even important\, they are just steps on the way. Like the original dialogues of the philosopher Socrates there might even not be a final conclusion at all. The process of the dialogue is all that really matters. This process might even be experienced as a kind of flow\, where every participant feels fully immersed into the communal exchange of thoughts. On top of that\, the question that has been chosen for the dialogue\, is examined from every possible perspective\, which often gives rise to innovative ideas and solutions\, because the views of all participants are compared and unified. It is a great way to train emphatic listening and multifaceted thinking. \nAbout the trainer\nErik Hoogcarspel studied philosophy and Buddhology in Groningen and Leiden. He taught Hinduism at the University of Nijmegen and philosophy at colleges and at the Internationale School voor Wijsbegeerte. His publications include a translation of a Buddhist second century text from Sanskrit to both Dutch and English\, and a book about the feasibility of a Western Buddhism. He published in several magazines and taught Socratic dialogue in high schools\, in pubs and in private institutions. \nRegistration to this event is compulsory and requires a modest fee of €2. \nThe workshop will be given by a professional trainer and includes coffee/thee/water.\n\nLocation: room 3.54 at the Wijnhaven Campus. \n  \n  Learn about the other How We Go Beyond workshops
