This semester, the Africa committee book club features the book The Perfect Nine by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. The story is based on the origin myth of the Gĩkũyũ- Kenya’s largest tribe. This book tells the story of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi who fled war and hunger and settled down at the foot of Mount Kenya. When 99 suitors arrive on their land seeking to marry Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi’s 9 Beautiful daughters (“The Perfect Nine”), the partners tell their daughters to choose for themselves but to choose wisely. The book follows their journeys of becoming the “matriarchs of the Gĩkũyũ clans.”
The book club will be a place to chat, to share thoughts and to have free discussion in smaller groups! It will take place biweekly on Mondays starting on the 19th of October!
